History was made last weekend, but did you notice? “Instructions Not Included,” a Spanish language comedy from Mexico, with English subtitles, featuring Eugenio Derbez, ranked fifth at the box office and took in ten million dollars. It beat blockbusters like “The Butler” and the Disney animation “Planes,” even though “Instructions Not Included” ran on ten times fewer screens. And this was in the USA. It’s the first time a Latino film has gone mainstream in America with such gusto.
The big story here is the emergence of a huge Latino market in the USA, hungry for entertainment content. It’s a new market wave, just coming of age, and one I hope to ride. Let’s hope that the thirst for content by Latinos in the USA extends to books, too. I’m pretty confident that it does, because Latinos are now major consumers of eBook readers, tablets, and laptops, and they’ll need content to put on those devices.
After producing my medical thriller, SECRET THOUGHTS, for two print versions, multiple eBook formats, and a soon to be released audiobook, I’m proofreading the Spanish version now. The Spanish version will be released along with a Spanish video trailer and multiple eBook formats. When I searched months ago for medical thrillers in Spanish, I counted them on one hand. Was there no market? No competition? No interest? I puzzled over how best to sell a Spanish thriller internationally, because I doubted the strength of the USA market for Spanish fiction.
But “Instructions Not Included” is a game changer, a prophecy, a watershed, and a reminder that the quest for content and markets is fluid and unlimited. I’m now confident that I’ll have a broad audience for my Spanish medical thriller. But the most amazing revelation: that magic market is right here in the USA!
☆☆☆☆☆I attended Bouchercon13, the World Mystery Convention in Albany, NY last weekend from September 20-22! Great fun giving my talk at Author's Choice on Friday, Sept 20. Topics included self publishing, social media, content management, websites, cross platform marketing, ebooks, blogs, audiobooks, video trailers, and more. Comprehensive handouts were provided at the session. I've gotten great feedback from those who attended my talk. Anyone who missed the session can email me for a copy of the handout. I signed SECRET THOUGHTS at Bouchercon on Saturday, 9-21. I got to meet and sign next to Marcia Clark, an extra bonus! A special thanks to all those who bought SECRET THOUGHTS at the meeting. Your support was overwhelming!
☆☆☆☆☆Author-Webmaster at work! I'm creating a new moderated forum: "Art and Medicine" for authors and readers to discuss and get answers to questions about writing authentic medical fiction, and historical information on physician authors and artists.
