ADDICTION IN MEDIA

December 7, 2013 at 6:28 AM

I find the portrayal of addiction in TV and movies to be unrealistic, unscientific, and often the fuel for sitcom humor. I’m looking for some accurate information on addiction (preferably free!) as a writer’s resource. Anyone know good publications?

Brian, you are so correct. It’s unfortunate that drug addiction is treated so poorly in medical entertainment media. We need more dedicated writers like you who will take the time to get it right. Take a look at this NIH MedlinePlus article and also the three links provided at the end of that article. This should get you off to a good start. I’d like to hear back from you and others with additional good sources of addiction information for writers and readers.

After 10 years of drug addiction and 3 trips to rehab, I've been straight for 3 years and I'm finally getting my life back together. No doubt the entertainment media has not made it easy, as many people think of me like one of those characters. Addiction is poorly portrayed and never funny. Glad to see writers discussing this issue.
